Here’s an update on what’s happening at Tim’s House. A quick reminder of the origins of Tim’s House; opened in 2008 in a partnership between Tim Griffith Foundation and the San Mateo Service League. Tim’s House is one of ten Hope House operated by the Service League. Our Foundation donates money annually for the operation of Tim’s House. Currently there are five men in residence ranging in age from 25 to 61 years old. This group of men have been in residence and participating in the Transition Program offered through the San Mateo Service League for approximately one year. Having formed a strong, supportive bond based upon their shared goal of recovery there is a feeling of stability and consistency in the House. Each man has their own path toward recovery in terms of tools they use, however all of them attribute a big part of their success to having a clean and sober living environment with which to call home.In addition to focusing on their recovery, each man has their own life personal goals they are working to achieve. One person is continuing their education, another is working to pay off debt accumulated during his addiction, and another finds that with his recovery, he can enter into a committed relationship, something that was unheard of before working his recovery. The Transition Program is facilitated by a Service League Hope House Counselor named Sydney Reynolds. What makes Sydney successful is her own personal journey into recovery as a Hope House Alumni and participation in the Transition Program herself. In her work with Tim’s House residents, she takes care not to project her own experience onto the men, rather to use her experience to empathize and adapt her approach to each man’s unique recovery situations. In addition to one-on-one meetings with the men, Sydney facilitates a weekly house meeting to discuss general house issues and successes and to further a supportive environment amongst the men.One of the next seps for these men is to secure housing for themselves. Syndey will not push right away onto this step as the men have bonded so successfully and are benefitting from this stability. This is a feature of the Transition Program run by the Service League. Each man receives the support and time needed to facilitate their recovery without generalized timelines applied to everyone. The more success they have at Tim’s House, the less likely they will be to slip back into their addiction. When the right time comes for each person, Sydney will help them to secure housing. If you would like to see Tim’s House continue to be a home for these men, donations of new towels and twin bed sheet sets are always welcome. The men are required to provide these items for themselves, but Sydney said these things can disappear over time! To donate, contact Julie Gayner at jgayner@timgriffithfoundation.org
